Henry and Effie Osborn at home

Henry and Effie Osborn

Harry reminisced about the time just before their engagement and praised Effie for guarding the secret of her love for him. The sketch of his room that he mentioned has not been found in the collection. As warning to our readers, Harry used some ethnically offensive language in this letter.

Meanwhile, Effie was visiting his family for the first time since their engagement and had found everyone to be more than cordial. She admitted that she was more reserved than Harry but claimed that her none of her letters to him had been “purely friendly.”

“Your style is so vivid that when you tell me of you feelings I can almost hear your voice.” Osborn, Henry 1884-11-30

“I received a very warm welcome from all & they have been lovely.” Osborn, Effie 1884-11-30a

“The engagement will not be a secret after tomorrow.” Osborn, Effie 1884-11-30b
