Henry and Effie Osborn at home

Henry and Effie Osborn

The title of today’s post is the code Harry and Effie started using on this date to indicate kisses.

Most of Effie’s letter was taken up with the mail: when it was picked up on Harry’s end; whether he had dropped a letter that had arrived muddied; and, Fritz delivering letters to her. She also wrote of Harry’s mother saying that he was a “third rate teacher.”

Harry had a mild case of the blues but it didn’t keep him from writing about the piano, his itchy feet, “the ladies” (Misses Weed and Elder) or his opinion of Unitarian Christianity.

“I think part of my [ill.] brain leaked out thro’ my nose….” Osborn, Effie 1885-9-20

“But where is the use of whining over it[?]” Osborn, Henry 1885-9-20
