Henry and Effie Osborn at home

Henry and Effie Osborn

The first letter Effie wrote today was all about viewing the body of Cardinal John McCloskey at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. She returned to the subject of the wedding and the blues she shared with Harry in the second. In both, she revealed racial and ethnic biases common at the time.

“It seemed really horrible to see a dead body decked out in so much color & finery.”

“…we all are apt to forget and stop going slow, & rush for all we are worth.” Osborn, Effie 1885-10-15b
